Why Private college? Choosing the college that is right for your student is an important decision. For many, an important part of that decision is cost. Private college tuition is considerably less expensive than that of out-of-state public colleges, and thanks to scholarship opportunities and financial aid, the cost of private college versus in-state public college may not be that big of a factor. More information about financial aid Many private colleges have a religious affiliation, which is often reflected in the school’s core values, regulations, and codes of conduct. The impact that religious affiliation has on the campus setting can vary greatly from one school to the next. Finding a college that fits well with family values can be an important factor for many in selecting a school. State schools have no such affiliation. Smaller class sizes at private colleges allow students and professors to interact on a more personal level. Passionate teachers care about the success of each individual student. Your student is less likely to get lost in the crowd, and more likely to have opportunities in tutoring and mentoring programs. Students can make a personal connection and build relationships that last a lifetime. Additionally, students have a better chance to participate and make a difference in athletic programs, student government and other extra-curricular activities that develop leadership skills and get the attention of prospective employers. The campuses of private colleges tend to be safer than those of public colleges. This may be related to the smaller size of the student population and the location of the campuses. The best way to find out about safety, both on and off campus, is to talk with current students or recent graduates. Many of Kansas’ 18 private colleges offer adult education and post-graduate degree programs for both traditional and non-traditional students. So continuing your education after entering the job market is an easy transition, whether full-time or part-time, on-campus or off. |
